Apple on set

Here’s a short digression from the normal PA stuff:

Despite the disillusionment I still somehow find some good in my blackened heart to help friends out on their shoots (as long as they’re not, you know, on the beach) or foof around in filmmaking myself. Knowing firsthand the intensity, scale, and inevitable costs of production I like to keep my shoots little affairs between friends. Having an HDSLR that records video is a dream come true, but the iPhone and iPad are also my favorite production tools for a few obvious reasons: yelp, gps/maps, and google, but also for their filmmaker apps. One of my favorites is mRelease, a neato little app with premade location, crew, actor, and property releases. The app allows you to use the iPhone/Pad camera to photograph the party, then they fill in their information and sign on the screen with their finger. The completed form can then be emailed instantly to both the signer and the coordinator.

It’s pretty fantastic, not just for the looks you get when people realize they sign their release on the screen like they would at the supermarket, but also because of how it saves having a clipboard, copies, and lots of pens never to be seen again. Maybe it doesn’t work so well when you have large numbers of extras who all need to sign docs at once, but when you’re doing your little shoots and have a manageable number of people, its great in a pinch.
